Light

Recently Ghibli Studio style AI-generated images has become a heated trend on the internet. Prior to this I have painted this movie scene of Laputa: Castle in the Sky on canvas. Under the hot pursuit of adversaries, the female lead’s necklace emanates light that shots right up the sky, penetrating through dark clouds, into the eye of a cyclone where the castle in the sky dwells. This light has become a guide leading the adventurers into the hidden, abandoned city Laputa.

As Christian, we are connected to God by the Light that is brighter than all things on Earth and cannot be grasped, fully deciphered, or chase away. Richard Wurmbrand, a Lutheran priest and founder of the Voice of the Martyrs, was incarcerated for 14 years under the Romanian communism regime. During his tough years of seclusion, his relationship with God through prayers became his stronghold. Despite his ongoing afflictions, nothing could hinder him from experiencing God’s presence that wrapped around him and filled him with peace. He was at times so spirit filled with joy that he was dancing in his cell, despite the times of deep sorrow and loneliness.

I am in awe of the perforating power of prayers, that no human authority could snatch it away from God’s children. One could be physically confined or deprived of rights, but no prayer is out of reach from our Father God before His throne of grace, through Christ’s “Amen” and the Holy Spirit. Not one prayer, neither one that is silent, or forgotten by the person praying, or made quickly would go unnoticed. But rather by faith, a prayer could lead to a momentous, transforming change. Not one individual could interfere another from praying in spirit, just as no one could stop God from drawing a person to Him. God’s pull and a man’s longing for Him acts as naturally as the rising and falling of pulses, and the ebb and flow of waves. His transcending peace warms our heart amidst deep troubles, and His comfort wraps around us like a warm blanket on a windy night, quiet and tranquil.

As dark, heavy clouds are looming, the kids in the painting venture into the unknown. The Light that represents Jesus, does not go dim but connects His people through the Holy Spirit with Father God. This power is profound and inextinguishable. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, … will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)
